History of Our Farm: 10 December 2006: The excavation for the building sites (arena and barn) are done! Our first four paddocks (2.5 acres each) are fenced in - even if it is temporary until we can install the permanent corner posts and gates in the spring, I can not wait to get the horses back to their new homes. Dad and I have built over sized loafing sheds in each paddock so the horses should be comfortable until the barn is built. We have spent the last two months digging trenches for water lines and electric for the pastures' automatic waterers. I guess the backhoe we bought was not a foolish purchase! Now that the pasture waterers are installed and the horses moved, our workload is tapering off - for now! Sadly, we have decided that the old dairy barn requires far more extensive repairs than we first thought, and will have to be taken down. It is paiful to "kill" such a lovely old building, but reality means that a new stall barn will have to go up instead. The interior of the house is still a nightmare, but slowly moving forward. With Dad leaving for Florida in a few days we should be able to recuperate and focus on our own living quarters. 3 January 2006: We found our ideal property after nearly a year's search and brought our horses, dog and (2) cats home in Fall of 2005. Located in Edgar, Wisconsin (a convenient 20 miles from both Wausau and Marshfield) our farm is on 25 acres of high, dry ground ideal for both turnout and riding. Formerly used for cattle, our barn is undergoing restoration and improvements to create a healthy and comfortable environment for the horses it houses. Winter has curtailed some of our projects, but the barn's interior is beginning to take shape! Meanwhile, we have completely demolished the house's old fashioned kitchen to build the gourmet kitchen of our dreams. Who knew putting up drywall yourself was such a challenging process.! By the time our barn's kitchen and lounge areas are ready for interior construction we should be quite accomplished at the task - and smart enough to hire professionals! In spring/summer of 2006, with the help of my father (Richard Olds) and our wonderful team of local contractors, we will be constructing a 70' x 140' indoor arena, an outdoor regulation Dressage court, a 100' x 200' outdoor jumping and show arena and will start to lay out our mini cross country course. It is daunting to try to accomplish so much in the short season that Wisconsin allows for outdoor projects in conjunction with riding, training and showing horses, but we are ready for the work that it will take to turn our vision into reality. |
